january in tokyo

a few pictures from my short time in tokyo before heading to school in january. I just got my film developed so this is why these are being posted so late! i've really got to start taking more pictures on each roll but there's something special about having a roll collated over a period of time.

The 鳥居 (torii) to Meiji-Jingu Shrine in Yoyogi Park

On Sundays the Ginza area of Tokyo has its main street closed to cars and is open for pedestrians to walk along and I love it.

spring in shinjuku-gyoen pt. 2

one of my favorite things that i did over spring break was to go to shinjuku-gyoen - and given that i had time to kill i spent an afternoon walking around the park. i read that the park was like an answer to new york's central park - and i have to say i agree. its a beautiful green oasis in the middle of busy shinjuku.

be warned: its not easy to get to the park from shinjuku station, just getting out onto the right exit is confusing enough. prepare a google map before you go, or use the free station wifi to load up a map.

the blossoms reminded me of the old hibiscus tree in my childhood home. the way the blossoms unfolded with a tint of yellow at their centre.

i do wish that sakura had a more distinct smell - but they make up for it in how they look!

these flowers hung so delicately that it was almost impossible to get the exact flow of the tree on film.

spring in shinjuku-gyoen part 1

i recently had the chance to go to tokyo for spring break - i'm now living in karuizawa, japan and thought it would be a fun opportunity to explore the city in a way i hadn't before.

late march/early april in tokyo is typically the prime time to catch the cherry blossoms (sakura) in full bloom. unfortunately this year the full bloom occurred just after i left tokyo - but there were a few trees that had blossomed so i went to check them out in shinjuku-gyoen national park.

these white cherry blossoms may be my favorite. there's something especially pure & elegant about them. really delicate sort of feeling.
